A Golden Love Story — Jack and Teresa Gareb

A Legacy Rooted in Golden
The story of Jack and Teresa Gareb is one of love, resilience, and deep ties to the town of Golden, BC. Their lives were woven into the fabric of the community, from early immigration stories to decades of entrepreneurship and family life.
Teresa’s Roots in Golden
Teresa Falbo was born in Golden on August 7, 1917, to Rosa Corelli and Santo Falbo, Italian immigrants from Cosenza and Calabria. Rosa and Santo married in Italy in 1910 and arrived in Golden on August 13, 1912, where they built their home and raised their family. Teresa was baptized on September 2, 1917, with Camilo Colonna and Marietta Perri as her godparents.
Jack’s Journey from Lebanon to Golden
John (Jack) Gareb was born on April 5, 1906, in Lebanon to Alice and Miriam Gareb. He arrived in Golden in 1926 and quickly became a dynamic force in the town’s business scene. Alongside his uncle Sam, Jack purchased the Lyric Theatre, which also housed a pool hall, dance hall, and taxi stand. After selling the Lyric in 1929, Jack built the Golden Motors building, while Sam constructed the Big Bend Hotel. Jack later took on the Ford Agency in 1931, selling it in 1935.
A Wedding to Remember
On October 8, 1936, Jack and Teresa were married at Sacred Heart Church in Golden. The Golden Star described the event as “a very pretty wedding.” Teresa wore a white satin gown with a train and an embroidered veil held by a coronet of orange blossoms. Her bouquet of pink roses and fern added a delicate touch. She was attended by Mrs. B. Danieli of Field, while Jack was supported by Mr. B. Daniele. After the ceremony, a wedding breakfast was held at the home of Teresa’s mother, followed by a honeymoon in Calgary.
Building a Life Together
Jack and Teresa welcomed their daughter Miriam in 1938 and son Jack in 1943. Jack’s entrepreneurial spirit continued to shape Golden’s landscape. He entered the trucking business, purchased the BA service station in 1947, and took on several vehicle agencies. In 1960, he built the Golden View and Yoho Chevron service station. Four years later, he developed the Gareb subdivision and began construction on the Finning tractor building. In 1969, he established the Morningside Campground, which later became the KOA Campground in 1981.
A Life Well Lived
After years of contributing to Golden’s growth, Jack and Teresa eventually retired and spent their winters in Kelowna, enjoying the milder climate. Their legacy lives on in the businesses, buildings, and memories they left behind. Though both have passed away, their story remains a cherished chapter in Golden’s history.
