Golden’s Stories, Told by the People Who Lived Them

 

The Golden Museum is more than a collection of artifacts — it’s a home for the stories, memories, and traditions that shaped our community. For generations, the people of Golden have carried knowledge that isn’t found in books: the way things were done, the moments that defined a neighbourhood, and the experiences only they could speak to.

 

About eight years ago, we began a project called Bearers of Tradition to preserve those voices. We sat down with some of Golden’s longest‑standing residents and recorded their memories — stories of work, family, hardship, humour, and everyday life in a mountain town. These interviews capture first‑hand knowledge that might otherwise be lost.

 

One of our storytellers, Leo Klafki, shared his remarkable experience during the Second World War, including the moment he was traded as a prisoner for a pound of butter. Others spoke about early forestry, railway life, community celebrations, and the quiet details of living in Golden before modern conveniences arrived.
